Fabric GSM Explained: Choosing the Right Weight for T-Shirts and Hoodies

When developing a custom T-shirt or hoodie, one of the first fabric questions you will probably hear is:

“What GSM do you want?”

For new clothing brands, GSM can easily become shorthand for quality.

180 GSM sounds basic.
240 GSM sounds premium.
300 GSM sounds even better.
500 GSM must be luxury.

But fabric does not work that way.

GSM tells you how heavy a fabric is per square meter. It does not tell you whether the fabric is automatically good or bad.

Two fabrics can both be 300 GSM and still feel completely different because of their fiber composition, yarn, knitting structure, finishing, compactness and surface treatment.

For clothing brands developing T-shirts, hoodies and streetwear, GSM should therefore be treated as one part of the fabric specification—not the entire specification.

What Does GSM Mean in Fabric?

GSM stands for grams per square meter.

It measures the weight of one square meter of fabric.

For example:

A fabric specified as 250 GSM has a nominal weight of approximately 250 grams per square meter.

This gives designers and manufacturers a useful way to compare fabric weight regardless of the width of the fabric roll.

In general:

Lower GSM → lighter fabric

Higher GSM → heavier fabric

But GSM does not directly tell you:

  • How soft the fabric is

  • How dense it feels

  • How durable it is

  • How much it stretches

  • How much it shrinks

  • Whether it pills

  • Whether it drapes well

  • Whether it feels premium

Those characteristics depend on additional fabric properties.

GSM Does Not Mean Garment Weight

This is another common misunderstanding.

A 300 GSM T-shirt fabric does not mean the finished T-shirt weighs 300 grams.

GSM measures the fabric weight per square meter.

The final garment weight depends on how much fabric is used.

An oversized XL T-shirt uses more fabric than a fitted S T-shirt, even if both use exactly the same 300 GSM jersey.

The final garment may also include:

  • Rib

  • Labels

  • Embroidery

  • Prints

  • Zippers

  • Drawcords

  • Lining

  • Other trims

GSM is mainly a material specification.

There is no universal rule that says a certain GSM must be used for a specific T-shirt.

However, several general ranges are useful during product development.

Lightweight T-Shirts: Approximately 120–160 GSM

Lightweight jersey is often used for:

  • Summer T-shirts

  • Promotional T-shirts

  • Lightweight fashion products

  • Layering pieces

  • Warm climates

These fabrics can feel breathable and soft but may have less structure.

Very light fabrics can also become more transparent depending on color, yarn and construction.

A lightweight T-shirt is not automatically low quality.

For certain products, a well-developed lightweight fabric is exactly what the design requires.

Mid-Weight T-Shirts: Approximately 160–200 GSM

This is a common range for everyday T-shirts.

It can provide a balance between:

  • Comfort

  • Breathability

  • Durability

  • Structure

Many mainstream casual T-shirts sit somewhere within or around this range.

For brands that do not want an extremely lightweight or heavyweight product, this is often a useful starting point.

Heavyweight T-Shirts: Approximately 200–260 GSM

This range is common in premium casualwear and streetwear.

Compared with lighter jersey, heavyweight fabrics generally create:

  • More structure

  • A stronger silhouette

  • Greater opacity

  • A more substantial hand feel

  • Better support for boxy fits

They are often paired with:

The garment will generally feel lighter and more flexible than a heavyweight streetwear hoodie.

Approximately 320–420 GSM

For many streetwear products, fabrics in this general range provide a good balance between weight and wearability.

Approximately 420–500+ GSM

French Terry vs. Brushed Fleece

GSM alone does not tell you what the inside of a hoodie feels like.

Two hoodies can both use 380 GSM fabric while having completely different constructions.

French Terry

French terry typically has loops visible on the inside.

It generally provides:

  • Good breathability

  • Moderate warmth

  • A clean structure

  • Good year-round versatility

It is widely used for sweatshirts, shorts, sweatpants and hoodies.

Brushed Fleece

Brushed fleece goes through an additional brushing process that creates a softer, fuzzy interior surface.

It generally feels:

  • Warmer

  • Softer

  • Fuller

  • More insulating

For winter or heavyweight hoodies, brushed fleece is often preferred.

However:

380 GSM French terry and 380 GSM brushed fleece are not the same fabric experience.

This is exactly why GSM should never be used alone when specifying a product.

Why Two 250 GSM Fabrics Can Feel Completely Different

Imagine receiving two T-shirt swatches.

Both are labeled:

100% Cotton — 250 GSM

Yet one feels firm and structured while the other feels softer and more flexible.

Several variables may explain the difference.

Fiber Composition

A fabric may use:

  • 100% cotton

  • Cotton/polyester

  • Cotton/spandex

  • Polyester

  • Viscose blends

  • Other combinations

Each fiber changes the performance of the fabric.

For example, polyester can influence durability, drying speed and dimensional stability, while elastane adds stretch and recovery.

Even within cotton, different cotton qualities and yarn systems can produce different results.

Yarn

The yarn itself influences:

  • Texture

  • Strength

  • Surface appearance

  • Softness

  • Fabric compactness

Two fabrics made from the same fiber composition can still feel very different because different yarns were used.

Knit Construction

Heavyweight streetwear often benefits from fabric that feels dense and stable.

However, simply adding weight does not guarantee compactness.

A loosely knitted heavy fabric can still feel soft or unstable.

A well-developed compact jersey may feel:

  • Dense

  • Smooth

  • Structured

  • Stable

even at a somewhat lower GSM.

When evaluating heavyweight T-shirt fabric, therefore, do not ask only:

“What GSM is this?”

Also ask:

“How does this fabric hold the silhouette?”

Match GSM to the Garment Fit

The fabric and pattern need to work together.

This is particularly important for oversized clothing.

Suppose you develop the same boxy T-shirt pattern in two fabrics:

Fabric A: 160 GSM soft jersey

Fabric B: 280 GSM compact cotton jersey

The finished garments can have the same chest, shoulder and length measurements but still look very different.

Fabric A may:

  • Fall closer to the body

  • Create softer folds

  • Feel more fluid

Fabric B may:

  • Hold the shoulder shape

  • Create a stronger boxy silhouette

  • Keep the body away from the wearer

Neither is necessarily better.

The right choice depends on the design.

That is why fit approval should ideally happen using the intended production fabric or a very similar substitute.

Match GSM to the Climate and Customer

A heavyweight garment may feel premium in one market and uncomfortable in another.

Consider where and when the product will be worn.

A 300 GSM T-shirt may work well for:

  • Streetwear

  • Cooler climates

  • Fall collections

  • Structured silhouettes

But a lighter T-shirt may make more sense for:

  • Tropical climates

  • Summer collections

  • Sportswear

  • Layering

Product positioning matters more than chasing the highest possible GSM.

Higher GSM Does Not Automatically Mean Better Quality

This point is worth repeating.

Higher GSM means heavier fabric.

It does not automatically mean:

Higher GSM = higher quality

A poorly developed 350 GSM fabric may have:

  • Pilling

  • Excessive shrinkage

  • Poor recovery

  • Uneven dyeing

  • Rough hand feel

  • Weak surface performance

while a well-developed 220 GSM fabric may perform extremely well.

Quality should instead be evaluated through a combination of:

  • Fiber composition

  • Yarn

  • Knit construction

  • GSM

  • Color

  • Hand feel

  • Shrinkage

  • Pilling

  • Dimensional stability

  • Stretch and recovery

  • Finishing

This gives a much more complete picture of the material.

GSM and Shrinkage

Cotton fabrics can change dimension during washing and finishing.

This affects both GSM and garment measurements.

For example, after washing, fabric may become more compact.

The finished garment may change in:

  • Length

  • Width

  • Sleeve length

  • Overall shape

For products with strict fit requirements, shrinkage should therefore be evaluated before final bulk production.

This is particularly important for:

  • 100% cotton T-shirts

  • Garment-dyed products

  • Vintage-washed clothing

  • Heavyweight cotton streetwear

The production pattern may need adjustment so the finished garment reaches the approved measurements after washing.

GSM and Garment Washing

Washing can also change the visual and tactile character of a fabric.

Streetwear brands commonly use treatments such as:

These processes may change:

Very heavyweight garments may also require different sewing or finishing considerations.

A 500 GSM hoodie may place greater stress on:

So increasing GSM can affect much more than the fabric quotation.

How Should a Brand Choose the Right GSM?

Instead of asking:

“What is the best GSM?”

start with:

“What product are we trying to create?”

Define:

  • Garment category

  • Target silhouette

  • Season

  • Climate

  • Target retail price

  • Desired hand feel

  • Required structure

  • Wash effect

  • Performance requirements

Then use those answers to narrow the fabric range.

For example:

Heavyweight oversized streetwear T-shirt

may point toward:

  • Higher GSM jersey

  • Compact construction

  • Strong neck rib

  • Structured hand feel

while:

Light summer relaxed T-shirt

may point toward:

  • Lower GSM

  • Softer construction

  • Better breathability

  • More drape

GSM becomes a tool for achieving the design rather than the design itself.

How to Approve Fabric Before Sampling

When working with a clothing manufacturer, physical fabric swatches are extremely useful.

Before choosing a fabric, review:

  • Composition

  • GSM

  • Color

  • Hand feel

  • Surface

  • Stretch

  • Recovery

  • Thickness

  • Drape

Where relevant, also consider:

  • Shrinkage

  • Pilling

  • Colorfastness

  • Washing performance

Once the fabric direction is selected, make the sample in that material whenever possible.

The sample allows you to evaluate the combination of:

Fabric + Pattern + Construction + Wash + Decoration

That combination is much more important than GSM alone.

Keep an Approved Fabric Reference

Once a fabric is approved, keep a clear production reference.

This may include:

  • Physical swatch

  • Fabric code

  • Supplier reference

  • Composition

  • GSM

  • Color

  • Finish

  • Approved sample

This becomes valuable for bulk production and future repeat orders.

Simply writing:

“300 GSM black cotton”

may not be enough to reproduce the exact same product several months later.

The more precise the reference, the easier it is to maintain consistency.

A Practical Fabric Approval Checklist

Before approving fabric for bulk production, confirm:

  • Fiber composition

  • Target GSM

  • Fabric construction

  • Hand feel

  • Surface appearance

  • Color

  • Stretch and recovery

  • Shrinkage

  • Drape and structure

  • Wash performance

  • Pilling performance where relevant

  • Compatibility with printing or embroidery

  • Final garment fit

  • Approved physical reference

  • Bulk fabric consistency

GSM should sit inside this checklist rather than replacing it.
