Why a Clothing Tech Pack Matters

Learn how to create a clothing tech pack with measurements, fabrics, trims, artwork and construction details for accurate sampling and bulk production.

A clothing tech pack is the working document that connects your design idea with the people who will actually develop and manufacture the garment.

For a clothing brand, it affects much more than the first sample. A clear tech pack can improve sample accuracy, costing, fit consistency, production efficiency and communication with the factory.

The purpose is simple: reduce assumptions.

Instead of relying on messages such as “make it oversized,” “use heavy cotton,” or “put the print around here,” the tech pack converts those ideas into specific production instructions.

A useful tech pack does not need to look complicated. It needs to give the pattern maker, sample maker, merchandiser and production team enough information to understand the same product in the same way.

What Should Be Included in a Clothing Tech Pack?

A production-ready tech pack normally includes several core sections.

1. Front and Back Technical Flats

Start with clear front and back technical drawings of the garment.

These drawings should show important construction details such as:

  • Neckline and collar construction

  • Shoulder shape

  • Sleeve construction

  • Pockets

  • Ribbing

  • Seams and topstitching

  • Zippers or buttons

  • Drawcords

  • Panels

  • Artwork placement

  • Labels and trims

Technical flats allow the factory to understand the structure of the garment before pattern making begins.

If your design contains unusual details, add close-up drawings or callouts rather than expecting the factory to interpret them from a mood board or reference image.

2. Measurement Chart and Points of Measure

A measurement chart is one of the most important parts of a tech pack.

Do not simply provide sizes such as S, M, L and XL.

You should define how each measurement is taken.

Depending on the garment, common measurements may include:

  • Chest width

  • Body length

  • Shoulder width

  • Sleeve length

  • Bicep width

  • Sleeve opening

  • Hem width

  • Neck width

  • Rib height

  • Hood width and height

  • Waist

  • Hip

  • Front rise

  • Back rise

  • Inseam

For oversized garments, measurements such as shoulder width, chest width and body length have a major impact on the final silhouette.

For example, changing the shoulder width or body length by only 1–2 cm can noticeably affect how an oversized T-shirt fits.

That is why measurements should be specific rather than described only as “relaxed,” “boxy” or “oversized.”

Define Measurement Tolerances

Measurements in bulk production will always have some manufacturing tolerance.

For critical measurements, the acceptable tolerance should be confirmed before production.

This gives both the brand and the factory a clear standard when checking finished garments.

3. Fabric Composition and GSM

Avoid descriptions such as:

“Heavy cotton.”

That leaves too much room for interpretation.

A better specification would be:

100% cotton, 260 GSM single jersey, compact finish.

Whenever possible, specify:

  • Fiber composition

  • GSM

  • Fabric construction

  • Stretch

  • Handfeel

  • Finish

  • Shrinkage requirements

  • Washing or special treatments

For example, two fabrics can both be 100% cotton and 260 GSM but still feel completely different depending on yarn, knitting structure, finishing and washing.

For this reason, fabric approval is usually best done using physical swatches or actual sample garments, not specifications alone.

4. Trims and Accessories

Every trim that affects the appearance or function of the garment should be documented.

This may include:

  • Main labels

  • Size labels

  • Care labels

  • Woven labels

  • Hangtags

  • Zippers

  • Buttons

  • Snaps

  • Drawcords

  • Metal hardware

  • Elastic

  • Rib

  • Patches

Whenever possible, specify the material, color, dimensions and placement.

For custom trims, reference images or artwork files are also useful.

5. Printing, Embroidery and Artwork

Artwork should never be communicated only through a mockup.

The factory needs production information.

For every graphic, specify:

  • Artwork file name

  • Printing or embroidery method

  • Width and height

  • Placement

  • Distance from seams or neckline

  • Color reference

  • Special effects

For example:

Front chest print: 28 cm wide, centered, 8 cm below neckline.

This is much clearer than simply placing a logo visually on a T-shirt mockup.

Depending on your design, decoration methods may include:

  • Screen printing

  • DTG printing

  • Puff printing

  • Heat transfer

  • Embroidery

  • Appliqué

  • Silicone printing

  • Discharge printing

If you are unsure which technique is suitable, the manufacturer can usually recommend an option based on the artwork, fabric and desired finish.

6. Color Standards

Digital colors displayed on a monitor should not be treated as final production colors.

Whenever color accuracy matters, use a physical reference such as:

  • Pantone reference

  • Approved fabric swatch

  • Lab dip

  • Strike-off

  • Previous approved sample

This is especially important when matching fabrics, rib, embroidery thread, prints and trims.

7. Labels and Packaging

Your tech pack should also explain how the finished garment will be branded and packed.

Common information includes:

  • Main label placement

  • Size label position

  • Care label position

  • Hangtag position

  • Folding method

  • Polybag requirements

  • Size sticker

  • Barcode

  • Carton requirements

These details may seem minor during the design stage, but they become important once the garment moves into bulk production.

Use the First Sample to Improve the Tech Pack

The first sample should not be treated only as a garment to approve or reject.

It is also a physical test of your tech pack.

When reviewing the sample, avoid vague feedback such as:

“Make it slightly bigger.”

Instead, give measurable comments:

  • Reduce body length by 2 cm

  • Increase shoulder width by 1.5 cm

  • Widen sleeve opening by 1 cm

  • Move chest print 1 cm upward

  • Increase hood depth

  • Reduce rib tension

  • Change fabric from 240 GSM to 280 GSM

Clear comments make the next sample easier to develop.

More importantly, every approved change should be updated in the latest version of the tech pack.

Do not leave important revisions scattered across WhatsApp messages, emails or separate documents.

Keep Clear Version Control

Tech packs often change several times during development.

Use clear file names such as:

Style001_TechPack_V1
Style001_TechPack_V2
Style001_TechPack_FINAL

This prevents the factory from accidentally producing from an outdated version.

The final approved sample and the final tech pack should describe the same product.

Before Sending Your Tech Pack to a Manufacturer

Before starting sampling, check that your tech pack contains the following information:

  • Front and back technical drawings

  • Measurement chart

  • Clear points of measure

  • Fabric composition

  • Fabric GSM

  • Color reference

  • Trim specifications

  • Artwork files

  • Artwork dimensions

  • Print or embroidery method

  • Label placement

  • Construction details

  • Washing or finishing requirements

  • Packaging requirements

If some information has not yet been decided, do not leave the section unclear.

Instead, write:

“Factory to propose.”

This tells the manufacturer that you intentionally want a recommendation.

Before Moving Into Bulk Production

Before approving bulk production, confirm the final:

Tech Pack → Sample → Fit → Fabric → Trims → Measurements → Artwork → Color → Labels → Packaging → Quality Requirements

These approvals should all point to the same final product.

A good production process is not based on one approval. It is a sequence of confirmed decisions.

Do I need a professional designer to create a tech pack?

Not necessarily.

A simple but clear tech pack is often more useful than a visually impressive document that is missing important production information.

For early-stage brands, manufacturers can often help refine incomplete specifications during product development.

Can a manufacturer quote without a tech pack?

Yes.

For simple garments or early-stage projects, a manufacturer may provide an estimated price based on reference images and basic specifications.

However, the quotation normally becomes more accurate once the fabric, GSM, measurements, construction, artwork and trims are confirmed.

Should the tech pack be updated after sampling?

Yes.

Any approved changes made during sampling should be added to the latest tech pack before bulk production.

The final tech pack should reflect the final approved sample.

Final Thoughts

A good clothing tech pack does not need to contain unnecessary complexity.

Its job is to make your product clear enough that different people involved in development and production can reach the same result.

The more clearly you define fit, fabric, measurements, construction, decoration and quality expectations, the easier it becomes for a manufacturer to develop an accurate sample and reproduce that result during bulk production.
